10 Amazing tips on How to Keep Active During Your Day at Work or at Home

This blog has been so quiet! I apologise but I am determined to keep content coming. Today I came across an article on some ideas to keep activity central to your day no matter where you are!

Adding activity into your day, contrary to popular opinion, is VERY possible. Choose activities that you like and better yet, love. Adults should aim for at least 2½ hours or 150 minutes of physical activity each week. Every little bit adds up, and doing something is better than doing nothing. Most important — have fun while being active!

1. Take 10
Do at least 10 minutes of activity at a time to reach your weekly goal. Take a walk between work breaks, 10 minutes before and after work and add a 10-minute walk at lunchtime.
2. Melting Pot – shake things up!
Start the week with a swim at the pool, take a zumba class during a weekday lunch, lift weights in the evening, and end the week by working in the garden. Don’t get so bogged down by routine because you also will get so bored. The reason I LOVE exercising is because there are thousands of options on how to keep fit and having fun too!

3. Be ready anytime
Keep comfortable clothes and walking or running shoes in your bag, the car or at the office.

4. Find ways to move
Take a brisk walk around the parking lot, jog to the bus stop, or ride your bike. If you have an infant or toddler, take a long walk using the stroller and everyone gets some fresh air.

5. Work out during your favourite show or movie!
Watch a movie while you jog on a treadmill or download a video on your phone and watch while you ride a stationary bike.

6. Be an active parent
Instead of standing on the sidelines, walk up and down the football pitch while your kid plays, run around with your kids in the playground when you take them out. Kids are the best source of energy so draw from them and it’s a good bonding time anyway!

7. Find support
Join a walking or jogging group (there many of these that meet at Karura), practice martial arts, or sign up for an exercise class in your community. Recruit family or friends for support. Putting a good support group around you is very key in living an active lifestyle and these people keep you motivated and you get to enjoy spending some quality time with them during your favourite activies!

8. Go outside! Be a kid and enjoy the outdoors!
Visit a park and spend time hiking, biking, or boating and even enjoy your favourite active childhood games . (In Nairobi, I’d suggest my favourite places, Karura Forest Ololua Nature Trail in Karen )

9. Look for wellness at work
Find a football, rugby, or volleyball team at your job. Find people who love being active at your workplace and do stuff with them!  You can also take the lead by starting a wellness or exercise group in your office! Not only will you help others be more fit, but it will motivate you and keep you accountable to your exercise regimen.
10. Housework? yes? No? Well, it is also a great source of physical activity to get you moving!
Clean the house, wash the car, or mow the lawn with a push mower. I have come to embrace housework for just that! I started doing more and more housework for a large part of this year and found that it keeps me very energised especially during the weekends when it is tempting to just kick back and relax most of the day.
Know that these activities count toward your goal of at least 150 minutes each week.
